Autochtonous grapes with black berries of very ancient origins. It is widespread on the territory (more than 50% of the vineyards of the area). He represents, no doubt about it, the most typical and intimate expression of the vine growing in Abruzzo.
The cultivation forms are: the "pergola" or "tendones", which is more traditional, and the "espalier", which is more appropriated for lower productions with a better quality. The Montepulciano bunch is middle-sized, alate, cylindrical, with rather solid black-purple grapes with a fleshy peel full of phenol compounds.
